Gambling losses and taxes

A win/loss statement is the club’s tally of your rated play. It is not a tax return. MGM’s own note in the research file says the MGM win/loss statement is not an official tax document. That wording is marked confirmed for the online path.

This page is not tax advice. It does not state a percentage of losses you can deduct. Deduction rules are specific, they change, and they depend on the rest of a return. Ask a tax professional before you use any figure from a statement.

What a win/loss statement shows

On the MGM layout we have, slot win/loss is coin out plus jackpots minus coin in. A negative number is a loss on that line. W-2G handpays sit in the jackpot column. Self-pay W-2G amounts sit in coin out. Those are column definitions from the example file, not tax categories.

Coin-in is the amount wagered, not your net. It can sanity-check a slot theo. It is not, by itself, a deduction.

What to verify

Whether your club’s statement is accepted as support for a loss, how W-2G income is reported, and whether a particular year is open on your return are questions for a tax professional and the current form instructions. They are not answered here.

Caesars, Choctaw, and the cruise clubs each describe a different way to request a statement. Those methods are on the club pages, with the label from the file. A method that is missing is marked unknown, not filled in.

Questions

Does this site tell me what percentage of gambling losses I can deduct?
No. It does not state a deduction percentage. Rules change and they depend on your return. This page is not tax advice.
Is the example statement someone’s tax record?
No. It is an anonymized activity summary used to show the columns. It is not a return and not a portrait of a typical player.
